The Modern City: New York City Skyscrapers

Coined by Frank Sinatra as the city that never sleeps, New York City is one of the most hustling and bustling centers of the global world. Inside any skyscraper in the Manhattan skyline, a passerby can find the world’s largest law firms, financial and banking institutions and even the United Nations. The most beautiful skyscrapers exist in New York City to include the Empire State Building the newest addition to the skyline; One World Trade Center.

These skyscrapers are not without their dismay however, as on September 11th, 2001, Islamic extremists punched a hole in the New York City skyline when they flew two jetliners into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center. New York did not buckle from this attack, as it remained a unified city boasting its pride for America. This is just one of the many tales future generations will tell of the beauty and dismay of the Manhattan skyline.

The Empire State Building has been the epicenter of every tourist visitation in New York City and even a focal point on tv shows and movies such as King Kong, How I Met Your Mother and Gossip Girl. It has even been replicated as a Lego model in Washington, D.C. The Empire State Building also took a plane crash in 1945 and has been the site of multiple suicide jumps and two shootings.

As cities began to experience an overpopulation problem, the easiest way to solve it was to build the cities into the heavens, vice trying to build a bunch of small one or two story buildings sporadically in the city. This also allowed for the city to ensure they could receive more revenue from the influx of rent and visitors to their large metropolis. This also unfortunately causes rent in New York City to have even prompted a political party called, The Rent Is Too Damn High Party.

The amount of skyscrapers in Manhattan is plenty, but their architecture is also beautiful and ornate in nature. Looking at photos does not do justice to seeing the FlatIron district, Condé Nast building, New York Times building or even Port Authority. Skyscrapers have allowed cities such as New York to fit almost every population and demographic into a small city to include skyscrapers throughout Little Italy and Chinatown. Although the most beautiful sight is Manhattan from above, no better feeling exists than for the tourist to give their regards to Broadway and feel the city for themselves.
